Ocean Climate and Variability
Observational and numerical modeling studies are being carried out in OSD, aimed at describing, understanding and predicting ocean climate and its variability in various parts of the world's oceans. While most studies are focused on the waters off Atlantic Canada, research is also being conducted on variability in the Arctic, North Atlantic and global oceans, and on interactions between the ocean and atmosphere.
These studies use observations collected in DFO and other monitoring programs (such as AZMP and AZOMP), and provide input to many other research and applied issues such as Climate Change and Impacts, Ecosystem Research, and Managed Fisheries.
Some of the primary sub-topics being studied are:
- Air-Sea Interactions, involving modeling and remote sensing studies of interactions between the atmosphere and upper ocean.
- Coastal Ocean Climate, involving modeling and observational studies of ocean climate variability on the NW Atlantic continental shelf and coastal ocean.
- Labrador Sea in the NW Atlantic, examining ocean climate and variability in this region of importance to both the global climate system and regional ecosystems.
- Ocean Circulation and Currents, involving observational and modeling studies of ocean currents and circulation in key areas.
